As our facility belongs to the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God, we adopt their principles and participate in the debate between bioethics and scientific progress.
These five values that guide our work feature in the February 2022 letter from the Superior General Donatus Forkan entitled The values of the Order. The Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God and their collaborators across the world (workers, volunteers, benefactors) share the responsibility of following these values in all their activity.
Hospitality is the central value of the Order, which guides our comprehensive and compassionate approach to healthcare, based on the values of quality, respect, responsibility and spirituality. The Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God and their collaborators share in this culture of hospitality, welcoming others with grace and generosity, responding to their wellbeing and health-related needs.
Quality care is fundamental for the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God. It goes beyond technique and protocol, translating into excellence, professionalism and comprehensive care. The Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God and their collaborators share this value, offering not only technical means to patients, but also human and spiritual means, and also constantly seeking new treatments and to improve care.
This value is rooted in understanding others, creating a safe, trusting environment that makes us better professionals, colleagues and patients. We recognise the dignity of all people, and we encourage understanding and tolerance. In addition, this value is closely related to social justice, civil and human rights, and the involvement of the patient's family.
For both the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God and the SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital, spirituality is a core aspect of the human experience, giving meaning to life. Spiritual and religious guidance is offered to all patients and their families, respecting all creeds and belief systems.
Responsibility means staying true to the ideals of Saint John of God, and staying ethical (bioethics, social ethics, management ethics). In addition, it also includes environmental protection, sustainability and social responsibility, where justice and equal distribution of resources are encouraged.
Bioethics
The Healthcare Ethics Committee (CEA) and the Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CEIC) help resolve ethical dilemmas that may arise in healthcare and clinical research by taking a humanist approach, respecting the values of the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of Saint John of God.
