At the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital's Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department we treat all disorders related with the ear, nose and throat (airway).

Nowadays, all types of hearing loss can be suitably treated. We have a team of professionals who are experts in the diagnosis of hearing loss (deafness) and the indication of the best treatment for each case. We have extensive experience in ear surgery and the application of cutting-edge technologies.

We also have extensive experience in the treatment of disorders related with the airway (the upper section of the respiratory tract; i.e., nose, paranasal sinuses, throat, larynx and trachea). With regard to we have the best technology available for dealing with any type of problem all obstruction, either congenital or acquired.

We are also experts in the most common illnesses that discipline, such as, earache, tonsillitis, sinusitis and sleep apnoea.

Accreditations

Since 26 December 2008, the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital has been a reference centre (CSUR) appointed by the Ministry of Health for reconstruction of the external ear, through our Microtia Comprehensive Functional Unit (UFIM).

Research

The Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) Department at the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is involved in a number of studies and lines of research:

  • Participation in the multicentre clinical genetic research group on Usher Syndrome.
  • Participation in the line of research into reconstructive microtia treatment with cartilage.
  • Participation in research studies relating to intraoperative measurements for cochlear implants (intraoperative monitoring).
  • Participation in the study on Delphi social policy and the rights of deaf citizens in Spain.
  • Clinical study project in infant patients with implants using functional magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Clinical analysis study in patients with Cytomegalovirus and hearing loss.
  • Ongoing online training project about infant hearing loss.
  • A multicenter, randomized, double-blind clinical trial to assess the efficacy and safety of ciprofloxacin 0.3% plus fluocinolone acetonide 0.025% otic solution in the treatment of acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes (AOMT) in poediatric patients. Start and end dates: 2011 - 2014.

Teaching

SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a university hospital affiliated with the University of Barcelona, and so we share our knowledge and train professionals to specialise in high-complexity medicine.
