We use acupuncture as a personalised treatment as a complement to traditional medicine.
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital runs this private Acupuncture Unit, which is a pioneering centre in the application of different techniques for patients who request it. We offer treatment to children, adults and, specifically, to women who have pregnancy or gynaecological problems and are receiving obstetrical and gynaecological treatment.
Acupuncture is a technique of traditional Chinese medicine that consists of stimulating certain points with fine needles, massage or moxibustion. The aim is to alleviate the symptoms of some diseases or conditions, to favour the optimal functioning of the body and to increase the patient's well-being.
The specific points that are stimulated through acupuncture are located close to the surface of the skin. In this way, certain physiological processes are activated in order to reduce pain or improve the patient's quality of life.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed, after conducting several clinical trials, that certain practices may be effective in relieving pain. For this reason, acupuncture is currently recognised as part of a set of techniques grouped under the name of integrative medicine, either as a treatment on its own or as a complement to other treatments.

En el caso de los niños se intenta evitar el uso de agujas, si no es necesario, para el tratamiento del dolor o las patologías infantiles; si se requieren se usan las mínimas posibles. En caso contrario se da prioridad al masaje Tuina, la digitopresión o la moxibustión o moxa, que no utilizan ningún tipo de punción.

Acupuncture for children and adults
It can alleviate discomfort related to trauma and rheumatic diseases such as low back pain, cervical problems or carpal tunnel syndrome. At times it is effective in soothing headaches or migraines
Treatment of gastritis, heartburn, ulcers, constipation, colitis, diarrhoea and irritable bowel.
It can relieve the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, common cold, rhinitis or sinusitis.
In some cases it improves the problems caused by dermatitis or eczema, psoriasis and herpes zoster.

Women's health
Traditional Chinese medicine can help you become pregnant when experiencing difficulties and treat certain reproductive health problems.
Disorders of the menstrual cycle, dysmenorrhoea or pain during menstruation, ovarian or breast conditions and symptoms associated with menopause.
It may reduce first-trimester nausea and vomiting, pelvic and low back pain and heartburn or insomnia.
Moxibustion may be used to treat pregnant women whose fetus is in breech position in the last weeks of pregnancy. The objective is to attempt to correct the position of the child prior to birth in cases where there is no risk.

The effectiveness of acupuncture therapy has been tested by the World Health Organization. The agency also warns that treatments should only be done under the supervision of qualified professionals. Research
A study is currently being conducted at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital that analyses the effectiveness of acupuncture in the care given to pregnant women.
The effect of acupuncture and moxibustion for turning abnormal fetal positions during pregnancy and favouring vaginal delivery is being analysed. This work is being conducted in collaboration with the Women's area.
Teaching
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a university hospital affiliated with the University of Barcelona. We share our knowledge and train professionals so that they may specialise in high-complexity medicine.
Master's in Energy Assessment and Acupuncture
The University School of Nursing at SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital offers a Master's in Energy Assessment and Acupuncture to train in this technique and have more tools available for patient care. The programme includes theoretical and practical modules.
