In the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital Arrhythmia and Familiar Cardiopathies Unit we are dedicated to the treatment of heart rate disorders, sudden death and genetic cardiology.
Diagnosing an arrhythmia early radically changes the patient's prognosis, since if the suitable treatment is followed, it ceases to be a potentially fatal disease, to become a chronic disease with minimal risk.
In our work of exploring the patient's heart, in addition to the medical records and electrocardiograms is provided by the parents, we apply the following tests: electrocardiogram, 24 - hour Holter monitoring, Tilt-test, electrophysiological study, non-invasive monitoring systems. We use other remote patient monitoring systems. If any anomaly is detected, an alarm is sent to the doctor. Heart devices commonly used: pacemakers, liberators and subcutaneous Holters.
We integrate the patient's setting as a fundamental part of his/her healthcare, from the family to the school. At the same time, we train the agents closest to the child so that we can meet the objective of making his/her everyday life as normal as possible and so that, in the event of an emergency, they can react appropriately. When there has been a case of certain death in the family, we conduct genetic studies of the children to thus detect whether there is a real risk.
Accreditations
We are the only reference center in Spain in pediatric electrophysiology, recognized by the Ministry of Health with the CSUR accreditation.
Why SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital?
We treat 24% of patients from countries outside the European Union.
National and international recognition
We treat 24% of patients from countries outside the European Union.
We are the only reference centre in Spain in Paediatric Electrophysiology, recognised by the Ministry of Health with the CSUR accreditation.
Our Head of Unit is one of the world’s most acclaimed experts in the field of arrhythmias and sudden death, Dr. Josep Brugada Terradellas, who, together with his two brothers, doctors Pere and Ramon Brugada, identified the well-known Brugada Syndrome as a disease.
Our experience and dedication has led us to be acknowledged at international level as well. 24% of our patients are from outside the European Community.
We apply monitoring systems 24 hours a day so that the doctor receives the constants of the patient, and thus be able to react quickly or even move forward in any risk situation
High prevention capacity

In families in whom there has been a case of sudden death, we do genetic studies to detect whether any of their children are carriers of the disease.
We also collaborate with the patient’s immediate medical setting as we believe that integrative medicine is the best way of controlling a disease that is frequently chronic.
We also have training programs for relatives and schools in which, among other things, cardiopulmonary reanimation (CPR) techniques are taught.
Catheterization is one of the techniques used in the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital.
Advanced techniques for the treatment of arrhythmias
Catheterization is one of the techniques used in the SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital
The introduction of a catheter allows to identify the electrical signals of the heart and to locate the origin of the alterations. In this video of the program "Health Science", shooted by the Spanish Television, we show how the intervention is by catheterization of a baby, Lucia, who was able to deal with an incessant tachycardia.

Our professionals
1% of children suffer from arrhythmias, and we work to ensure that this life threatening illness can become a normalised and controlled chronic condition.
Research and innovation

In the Arrhythmias Unit, we are in the process of developing new tools for the treatment of paediatric arrhythmias.
Teaching
SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital is a university hospital affiliated with the University of Barcelona, and so we share our knowledge and train professionals to specialise in high-complexity medicine.
